Dr. Lora Liu discovered her interest in laparoscopic surgery early in life. As a teenager, she spent hours in the operating room, watching with fascination as her father, Dr. CY Liu, perform surgery, including endometriosis surgery.
In college, she double majored in biophysics and music, but ultimately decided to pursue medicine. She graduated from Loma Linda University School of Medicine, after which she spent a year in family medicine/preventive medicine residency at Loma Linda University.
Upon realizing that her true passion was surgery, Dr. Liu transitioned to NYC for a four-year Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Northwell Health – Lenox Hill Hospital, after which she completed a rigorous two-year subspecialty fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic, under the training of Dr. Javier F. Magrina and Dr. Paul Magtibay. Dr. Liu’s surgical expertise is highly recognized, for she is called upon as a trainer and proctor in the use of the robotic surgery by her peers, as well as by robotic companies.
Although she has undergone training in urological and colorectal surgery during her fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, she firmly believes that any complex endometriosis surgery, should include a multi-disciplinary team due to the frequent multi-organ involvement in the disease. For that reason, Dr. Liu routinely has a urologist, general surgeon, cardiothoracic surgeon, or other appropriate sub-specialist in the operating room during her complex endometriosis surgeries. This then allows those involved organs to be corrected during the endometriosis surgery, thereby eliminating the need for the patient to return for another surgery/surgeries. This, of course, brings untold benefit to the patient.
Dr. Liu is passionate about helping women suffering from endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain to achieve their highest quality of life. Because the patient’s journey does not end with surgery, she maintains working relationships with physiatrists, pain management specialists, and pelvic floor physical therapists as an extension of postoperative care. In addition to her passion for endometriosis surgery, Dr. Liu is an avid runner, having completed 59 marathons (and counting) and over 40 ultramarathons, ranging in distance from 50k to 100 miles. She is happily married to her husband, Jim, with whom she enjoys making memories through cooking, traveling, and running after two adorable but lively toddlers, as well as running for fun!
